A Caring, Connected Planned Community.
Reston exemplifies community. Neither a subdivision nor a bedroom community, it is rather a place where people come to settle, work, and play--drawn by the location, local businesses, amenities, natural beauty, and people--and quite often stay their entire lives.

Residents are characteristically connected to one another and the greater community, and to activities and causes they care deeply about. Consequently, a number of activities and organizations exist to cater to these many interests; there are art and theatre classes, bike clubs, running clubs, swim teams, and book clubs, among countless others. There may be as many organizations as there are interests. And it's not just the individuals who care about the community; businesses also participate in their own way, giving generously to local public education and other charitable efforts.

A Town with a Vision.
In the early 1960s, Mr. Robert E. Simon conceived the vision for Reston; in 1962, his plan was accepted. Today, after over 30 years, his vision combines the best of the city--the strength of community-minded local business--with the best of the suburbs--its greenspace and residential living.

Window shopping

Reston Town Center, which opened in the early 90s, is an open-air downtown center, distinct from a mall in both its concept and appealing architecture. In addition, village centers scattered throughout Reston provide basic services to residents.

Reston's natural space--its parks, greenspace, and network of pathways--are pervasive. Some of its parks include the following:

  • Lake Fairfax Park
  • North Hills Park
  • Baron Cameron Park
  • Reston North Park
  • Stuart Road Park
  • Washington & Old Dominion Regional Trail Park
  • Sunrise Valley Park
  • South Lakes Drive Park
  • Twin Branches Nature Trail
  • Walker Nature Education Center

Mr. Simon's vision has taken 30 years to fully mature, but it has remained true in its initial policy of non-exclusivity. Everyone can find a way to live in Reston because of its many (and often very affordable) housing options; the resulting community is better for the diversity.

Crowds

Come Stay Awhile.
You might think that as a planned community, Reston would appear uninspired, as many planned communities are perceived to be. Rather, it is creatively designed, integrating a number of different housing styles around its village centers, all set among preserved wooded lots.

Reston is not an incorporated town; rather, it is an association deeply committed to making the community a wonderful place to live, work, and play. The Reston Association, for example, offers 16 swimming pools, 49 tennis courts, and numerous parks with plenty of space to recreate. People often move to Reston for these amenities and end up staying for life, able to move up or down in housing options according to their family needs.

In the Center of it All.
Reston LocalsReston is Virginia's second largest business center, and home to over 2,400 corporations and national associations including:

  • Oracle
  • USGS
  • Shell
  • Citigroup
  • MCI
  • WorldCOM
  • GE
  • Rolls Royce
  • TRW
  • Apple
  • AOL

In general, there are three major centers for these corporations--Tyson's Corner (located 15-20 minutes away in rush hour), Washington D.C. (40-45 minutes away in rush-hour traffic, and 20 minutes away at other times), and the intersection of Route 28 and Loudoun County, west of Reston. The value of Reston is that it lies in the center of them all. And with the local network of major transportation routes, and a light rail on the way, you'll appreciate the convenience even more.
